Introduction

The Discussions tool is an area for collaboration that allows participants to post, read and reply to messages; to share thoughts, ask questions or work with peers on assignments and homework. You can use the Discussions tool to:

  • Create discussions for class, group or student driven activities
  • Assess discussion posts and link to the grade book
  • Control privacy, enrolments and approvals of discussion posts
  • Subscribe to receive notifications of discussion activity

Terminology

Term Meaning
Discussion Forum Category for discussion topics
Discussion Topic Topic or area for discussion created by the Instructor
Discussion Thread Thread of related messages under a topic
Discussion Post Message or reply within a thread or topic

Finding Discussions

To access the Discussions tool, click on the Communication menu in the navbar.

Discussion List

The Discussions List landing page is where you can view and manage all discussions.

Discussions list top section 10.3

  1. Subscriptions tab lists all discussions you have subscribed to
  2. Group Restrictions tab lists all discussions restricted to particular groups
  3. Statistics tab provides an overview of discussion activity sorted either by users or forum and topic
  1. In Settings, you can select how discussions are displayed
  2. The New and More Actions menus are where you can create new forums and topics or copy, reorder or restore items already created or deleted

  1. Filter by – option to filter by unread or unapproved posts
  2. Discussions are listed in Forums (e.g. Welcome)
  3. Beneath the Forum is the Topic (e.g. Welcome to AST1001)
  4. Hide or Expand All Topics within the forums

Warning You can have multiple forums and topics, but you must create a forum before you can create a topic since all topics belong to forums.

  4. Filter by Unread or Flagged posts
  5. Example Post
  6. Dropdown menu to Edit, Mark as Read, Flag, Pin, Copy, Print or Delete thread
